Review of the Preacher
posted by Lynn

The Preacher is the story of eight young men who become friends in the barracks and trenches of World War II. This novel is divided into three parts: The Boys, The War, The Men. The first and third sections are exceptionally well written. (There's nothing wrong with the middle section, but it's the beginning and end that really impressed me.)

"The Boys" provides a vignette on each of the young men just prior to being drafted or volunteering for war. Each vignette is well written and conveys in just a few short pages remarkable character portraits and stories. Each could almost stand alone as very short stories. That doesn't mean they don't hold together....just that each life is complete in itself before the eight "boys" meet up in the war.

Similarly, the third section ("The Men") which provides the story of each of the homecomings, is also powerful and again, each is wholly satisfying in itself. But an added surprise is provided when the plot shifts to tie things together in an unexpected way.

The book provides vivid and touching images of everyday life and of human nature. But it is not over-written -- there is a sparseness or lightness of style that packs a lot of punch into this short novel.
